U15: Legal and Ethical
Legal Issues
Copyright - This gives the creator of the work exclusive rights to the use of their product and to adapt, copy, sell or communicate ideas to the work.
To prevent breaching this act I intend to entirely use my own footage, characters, narrative, settings/locations and imagery. This is also inclusive of the soundtrack/incidental music which I can request to use with permission, create my own or use copyright free music for my movie trailer. This therefore, avoids issues with the BBFC.
Intellectual Property Rights - Rights given to the person for their creation in which they hold exclusive rights over their work for a period of time.
Similarly to copyright, everything I use I intend to be entirely of my own, including examples such as footage or the logo. The only potential issue with this would be the soundtrack which can be averted from breaching this act through using my own/copyright free music.
BBFC Regulation: Actors within the product are teenagers therefore, considerations need to be made with what is shown on screen; a possible issue being alcoholic references which could cause problems due to the legal drinking age and regulation on how alcohol is presented by the BBFC. A method of getting around this would be not showing the actors drinking but only holding the bottles. The regulation by the BBFC stating that any who are under 25 cannot be physically drinking however, those under can still be shown holding alcohol.
Ethical Issues
Representation - Not misrepresenting cultures and demographics within the film trailer. An example of a possible misrepresentation within the trailer for Campaigns and Conjurations would be with Kowalski who is a Polish chef therefore, Polish stereotypes or jokes relating to their ethnicity should be avoided.
Misrepresentation can be avoided within my film trailer as culture isn't a relevant subject to the narrative however, this can be further avoided through averting stereotypes, allowing the crew to read the script and not portraying ethnic groups inappropriately via slander, libel or any other form in the trailer.
Age Appropriate - Making the film trailer in a way which follows the BBFC's regulation standards for products intended for an audience of 12+.
Following the BBFC's guidelines for age classification such as the portrayals of threat and violence which will follow the less restrictive guidelines due to the fantasy setting and comical depiction and that it is expected by the audience. This also follows the guidelines of a 12+ product due to no portrayal of drugs, nudity (or anything sexual) or discrimination.
Treatment of Staff/Crew - Those working during filming dates are treat fairly.
Crew, including actors, director and cameraman will be given appropriate attire for the weather and location as well as catering outside of filming to ensure wellbeing of those involved. I have created a call-sheet as well so that each staff member knows how many hours they will be working, what they will be doing, where and when. This ensures that everyone involved can understand what is being asked of them so that they can raise any issues with what is planned before production.
Precautions to Keep Cast & Crew Safe
Before filming, a risk assessment has been produced for each filming location: addressing issues like uneven surfaces in rural locations and traffic hazards in urban areas. This in combination with signed release and consent forms, help to clarify that each involved member of production including their GDPR have been explicitly stated and understood by each person involved.
